Applying for LEAP Certification

The Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) must certify that you meet the disability requirements to be eligible for a LEAP class exam. You can contact the DOR and speak with a counselor to find out how to obtain LEAP certification. To find a local DOR office, here are a few different options:

Applying for LEAP Exams
Once you have obtained your LEAP certification from the DOR, you can apply for LEAP class examinations. In addition, you can continue to apply for traditional State examinations.

Applying for Job Openings
Once you have taken a LEAP exam for a particular classification, you will be placed on a LEAP hiring list and are eligible to start applying for job openings in that particular classification. To search for job openings, visit California State Jobs and search for that classification.

Leap 3 8 3 – Comprehensive File Management Application Requirements Los Angeles County
Examination Appointments: A selected LEAP candidate will serve a limited-term appointment for no more than one year. Prior to the examination appointment, you will be given the duty statement which explains the duties and functions of the position and what will be evaluated during the examination period. You will also be briefed on the evaluation standards for the job examination period.

Job Examination Period: A job examination period for a LEAP-certified class is the same as the probationary period of the parallel classification. During this time, your performance will be evaluated and assessed at least once every four weeks. The final evaluation will include a recommendation on whether to appoint you to the parallel classification. You will not be required to serve an additional probationary period once you are appointed to the parallel classification.

Status of Candidate During the Job Examination Period: During the job examination period, you will not receive permanent civil service status. However, you will receive the same salary and benefits as other state employees in limited-term positions.
